We’ve all been there. I’m a GENIUS at getting to breakdown before I SHIFT. (Not surprising since I’ve been practicing my entire life and externally well rewarded for my proficiency level).
Know what “off the rails” means? We’ve been ignoring all the subtle signals that we’re out of alignment and failing to take care of ourselves. Sign after sign after sign over week over week over week = Off The Rails Full Tilt Inner Scream.
When I go off the rails, it looks like a nose dive into a mud puddle of anxiety and forceful will. I’ll just push harder, work more, turn up the volume until whatever it is goes away. At 48, I’ve finally learned that it never does simply go away.
I love questions, and I particularly love noodling with questions that uplift. I hear a lot of us asking: “Why do I have to breakdown to breakthrough?” or “Why can’t I figure this out?” (Judgement, judgement, judgement = Gasoline on the fire).
A better question is: What can I do every day to check in with myself, feel into my truth, and gracefully ease my way back to my True North?

Breathwork. I commit to at least 10 minutes (typically 15) of breathwork every day. Our exhalation is a graceful release of what we are ready to compost. It is a settling into our bones. It is shifting our vibration from one aligned with external chaos to one aligned with our heart. Our inhale – Inhalation – is also translated as Inspiration. And it is just that. It is a drawing in, infusing with vitality, a willingness to say YES to new life.
We breathe every day for survival, but conscious, full, round, spacious breath is a breath for arrival; in the present moment, for ourselves, and for our potential.
When our attention is directed at the rhythm of our breath instead of our swirling thoughts, the intelligence of the rest of us – body, spirit, and heart – has a chance to emerge. It is this intelligence that brings us back to True North.
What do you do when you don’t have time? You do it anyway. When you take your seed, soften. Give yourself permission to stay until the tension melts. Stay until you sense space in your being. Stay until you feel nurtured. Stay until you remember that what you do is not who you are.
